9. Historic Goose Creek Parish

This land was once a part of the Elms Plantation owned by the Izard Family of England. Like many Europeans in the late 1600’s they emigrated here in search on new economic opportunities and that’s exactly what they found. By 1706 their new home had been incorporated into Saint James Goose Creek Parish. It encompassed parts of present-day North Charleston, Ladson, Summerville and Goose Creek. The Parish went on to become one of the most wealthy and influential settlements in colonial South Carolina. Interestingly enough the first colonial census taken in 1720 and reported Goose Creek Parish contained 107 white citizens compared to over 2,000 enslaved African laborers. These records reflect the fact that rice was the number one industry here at that time and to be successful as a rice planter one needed an abundance of suitable land, reliable freshwater and a surplus of knowledgeable laborers. All three were available historic Goose Creek Parish.
