1. Waterparks

Thanks for taking the time to check out this cell phone tour stop – we hope you’re having a great day at your Charleston County Park! Have you noticed the colorful bins at the waterpark marked “Trash” and “Compost”? When you order food or drink here, the plates, utensils, cups and wrappers you are given are now compostable, meaning they break down into soil. Instead of hauling all waste to a landfill, the items in these bins are now taken to The Charleston County composting site at Bee’s Ferry Landfill, where in a little over a month they will be transformed into very healthy, nutrient-rich soil that can be used throughout the parks or in your own yard or garden. You can imagine that with several thousand people visiting your waterparks each weekend throughout the summer, a lot of leftover food and trash could be generated. In just the first season, visitors like you helped compost over 14,000 pounds of food and serving ware. That’s over 7 tons of waste kept out of the landfills that instead will be turned into healthy, useful soil. We’re very proud of how much you and other park visitors have composted, and we project that with your help we will compost over 20,000 pounds during the 2013 season! Participating is as easy as putting your leftover food and serving ware in the correct bin. Thanks for doing your part to keep the Charleston County Parks green. Enjoy your day at the waterpark!
